The role of technology in modernising care home services

7th January 2025 | Technology

Technology has become an integral part of our lives, and in my opinion, it has the potential to revolutionise the care home sector. Over the years, I’ve seen care homes adopt various tech solutions, and the results have been mixed.

Take digital health records, for example. With electronic records, healthcare providers can access up-to-date information instantly, ensuring residents receive the right care at the right time.

Telemedicine is another game-changer. In the past, residents had to endure the stress of traveling to medical appointments. Now, with virtual consultations, they can receive medical advice from the comfort of their care home.

Smart home devices have also made a significant impact. From fall detection sensors to voice-controlled assistants, these devices enhance safety and convenience for residents. Finally, social connectivity platforms deserve a shout-out. Staying connected with family and friends is crucial for mental well-being, and these platforms make it easier than ever.

The challenge as I see it is successfully implementing new technology. Issues around training staff, building new processes and behaviours can dampen the impact of technology.
In my view, embracing technology isn’t about replacing human care, it’s about enhancing it.

The right tech solutions can free up and empower staff to focus on what they do best: caring for residents.
