Last year, I had the privilege of chairing the panel session “Adult Specialist Care: Where is the Leadership and Direction?” at the LaingBuisson Social Care Summit. It was an enlightening and thought-provoking discussion that brought together sector leaders to address the pressing challenges facing the care home industry.
Shining a light on key challenges
The session underscored the urgency of the issues we face as a sector. By 2035, we anticipate a shortfall of 58,000 beds, with demand for care beds projected to nearly double by 2050. These stark realities, compounded by workforce shortages, aging Registered Managers, rising costs, and staff burnout, demand immediate and sustained attention. As chair, my goal was to spotlight these challenges while fostering a solutions-driven dialogue. We explored critical questions: How do we meet the evolving needs of working-age adults and older people? How can we integrate technology to improve care while safeguarding privacy? And, crucially, how can we support care providers to adapt and thrive amidst these pressures?
Insights from the Panel
Our panel of experts brought a wealth of knowledge and experience.
- Rebecca Bauers: Interim Director at CQC, highlighted the importance of person-centered care and tackling restrictive practices.
- Jamie Stuart: Deputy Head of Health and Social Care at Virgin Money, shared perspectives on funding challenges and opportunities for growth.
- Andrea Kinkade: CEO of Lifeways Group, emphasised empowering care teams and fostering inclusion for individuals with complex needs.
- Rebekah Cresswell: CEO of Priory, offered insights on patient-centric care and the role of integrated care pathways.
Each panelist contributed valuable perspectives that resonated with the audience and sparked dynamic conversations about the future of care.
Moving forward
The discussion was not just about highlighting problems but about identifying practical solutions. We talked about the need for better workforce support, from fairer pay to improved working conditions, and how collaboration with regulators like the CQC can drive positive change. Reflecting on the session, I’m encouraged by the collective commitment to addressing these challenges head-on. The insights shared reaffirmed the importance of coming together as a sector to innovate, adapt, and ensure we’re prepared for the future. I’m grateful to have been part of such a vital conversation and look forward to continuing these discussions as we work towards a stronger, more sustainable care sector. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the LaingBuisson Social Care Summit. Together, we’re shaping the future of care.
